Niger Delta group disowns militia
leader
CONGRESS
of Niger Delta Youths (CNDY), an amalgamation of all youth bodies in the Niger
Delta, has disowned Alhaji Asari Dokubo, a self-style militia leader claiming to
be fighting for the welfare of Niger Deltans.
A statement signed by the CNDY president,
Mr. Mfon Joe Etukudoh, expressed support for the police’s determination to
arrest and prosecute Alhaji Dokubo, who is described as an alleged "notorious
criminal and cultist" already declared wanted by the police.
"We categorically dissociate ourselves
from the activities of the alleged cultist, Asari Dokubo and of course, disowned
him and all those associated with him.
"For the avoidance of doubt, the Ijaw
Youth Congress (IYC), Ijaw National Congress (INC) and Congress of Niger Delta
Youths (CNDY) are legitimate vehicles for the promotion of change with the
objective to seek through dialogue, the economic and political development of
the people of Niger Delta who have suffered deprivation and degradation as a
result of oil exploration and exploitation over several decades," the statement
said.
Stating that the listed organisations are
not militant, CNDY said they will resist any attempt by Asari Dokubo and his
cohorts to cloth us in the "colour" of a militia."
"The Ijaw nation and indeed the good
people of Niger Delta are very decent and organised people. The president of the
Ijaw National Congress (INC), Prof. Kimse Okoko is very responsible and co-ordinated.
We will therefore, as future leaders of not only the Niger Delta but the
Nigerian nation not allow miscreants to smear our great image built and nurtured
by our founding fathers," CNDY stated.
The group said it will join the leadership
of the parliamentary caucus from the Niger Delta of the House of Representatives
to advise the people of the region, Nigerians, international community and all
men of goodwill to ignore the antics of the rejected leader.
