FRIENDS, well-wishers and
associates of the Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, have graced the photo
exhibition mounted for him at the Shell Hall of MUSON Centre, Onikan, Lagos.
The occasion, which was part of the week-long activities to
mark the 70th birthday of the renowned poet and novelist, attracted dignitaries
from all walks of life.
The 47 photographs of Prof. Soyinka on exhibition captured
his life and times including the one taken with his parents when he was very
young.
In a paper entitled: Curatorial Note, Dapo Adeniyi
said the exhibition “was far from exhaustive” as they had difficulty in deciding
which of the “exhumed photographic heap would merit a place on this slim
listing.”
He, however, said his colleague, Bankole Olayebi, whose book
of Soyinka’s photographs as an integral part of his 70th birthday celebration,
enjoyed much greater freedom in this regard.
He said they relied mostly on the goodwill of friends, family
and associates of Prof. Soyinka, who offered their long acquired, sometimes
browned and dog-eared photo card pictures for their digital replication.
He said though some may be repaired through digital devices,
but pointed out that none in anyway altered or transformed.
“No background view is replaced and this is an almost
irresistible temptation in digital photography.”
The images, he said, “spoke eloquently about times, epochs,
phases of life and work of our subject and the history of our nation in which he
has played a starring role.”
Adeniyi stated that digitalizing vital collections of this
nature was important to everyone and no need for one to get unduly emotional
about them.
He, however, recalled that one painful example was the
Soyinka’s portrait, which used to adorn the office of the Head of Department (HOD)
of Theatre Arts at the University of Ibadan, saying it was one of Soyinka’s
soulful portraits ever glimpsed.
