VINCENT ADEKOYE, Benin
A 20-man Land Use Allocations
has been inaugurated in Edo State to ensure an equitable, rational and effective
land allocation in the state.
Inaugurating the committee, in Benin, Governor Lucky
Nosakhare Igbinedion, noted that the present state of land use management in the
state was far from satisfactory, saying that indiscriminate encroachment of
government land resulting from unauthorised subdivision of plots designated as
residential, playground has been the order of the day and called for a reverse.
He said due to flagrant disobedience of town-planning laws,
buildings have been erected across drainage’s including the most, which
necessitated government to set up the state planning enforcement committee to
check the ugly trend.
The governor charged the committee to ensure a more rational
allocation of lands among competing uses, namely residential, industrial,
commercial, agricultural and institution, which, he said, must be in conformity
with the approved master plan of the state.
Other terms of reference include advising government on any
matter connected with the management of land in the designated urban areas, as
well as any matter connected with the settlement of persons affected by
revocation of rights of occupancy on the ground of over-riding public interest
and to determine disputes as to the amount of compensation to be paid.
He charged the committee to be involved in the processing of
application for certificates of occupancy and the processing of revenue derived
from land transactions.
Dr. Igbinedion expressed the concern of government in
equitable land allocation, saying that government is also considering various
options for generating revenue through an effective land management policy,
assuring the support of government to the committee in the realisation of this
objective.
Responding, the chairman of the committee, Chief Larry
Ederaro, thanked the government for the appointment, assuring that members will
strive towards implementing government objectives.
