Nwizu�s death: Stop lobbying me for position � AyuPAUL MUMEH, AbujaINTERNAL Affairs Minister, Dr. Iyorchia Ayu, has cautioned top officers of the Nigeria Immigration Services (NIS) against lobbying him for appointment as Comptroller-General (CG), insisting that the late Lady Uzoamaka Nwizu remained the substantive CG until further notice. Following Nwizu�s death and fears of mass purge on account of in-fighting and shady deals, the acting CG and incumbent Deputy Comptroller-General (DCG), Investigation, Mr. Musa Baraya, had recommended that some officers be redeployed. But Ayu, who has been inundated with complaints and series of lobby, rejected the recommendation and cautioned that late Nwizu who died on July 5, had not been replaced. The minister attributed sinister motives to the recommendation, saying it was ill-timed and uncalled for, especially when Nwizu had not been buried. Ayu cautioned top officers of NIS against embarking on any major exercise until a new CG was appointed by the Federal Government. Unofficial but dependable sources told the DAILY TIMES in Abuja that all the deputy and assistant Comptrollers-General of Immigration may be fired to create room for smooth operation and avoid the in-fighting that characterised Nwizu�s tenure. Nwizu, who was appointed on January 14, 2000 as CG, died few weeks ago during a protracted battle with leukaemia (cancer of the blood) in a Canadian hospital. She was the first woman to occupy such position in the nation�s history. President Olusegun Oba-sanjo received several international commendation for appointing Nwizu to that position.
