NDA probes commandant over funds misappropriation

GODWIN ISENYO, Kaduna

THE authorities of the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), Kaduna, have set up a board of inquiry to ascertain the veracity of allegations of maladministration and misappropriation of funds against the Commandant, Major-General Abel Akale, by civilian staff of the institute.

Some civilian staff of the nations foremost military university, particularly teachers, recently threatened to boycott lectures, accusing the leadership of corruption, poor administration and misappropriation of fund, among others.

Besides, the teachers, who petitioned President Olusegun Obasanjo and Minister of Defence, Dr. Musa Kwankwaso, to wade into the matter with a view to investigating the happenings in the academy, also accused the commandant of rearing a young lion (cub) which he was alleged to be spending over N30,000 per week.

Against this background, NDAs Public Relations Officer, Major Timothy Antigha, stated in Kaduna at the weekend, that the board headed by Professor Adeyemo Aderinto would determine the veracity of the allegations and claims raised and make recommendation to the authorities of NDA.

Dismissing any fear of victimisation or witch-hunting any member of staff of the institute, the NDA spokesman, urged the staffers to ignore rumours making the rounds that the board of inquiry was set-up to witch-hunt.

According to him, the pre-occupation of the academy at this point is the successful organisation of the activities lined up to commemorate the 40th anniversary of this great institute and the passing out parade of the 51 regular course.

Consequently, Major Antigha stated further that the authority of the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) implores all staff to exhibit a high sense of commitment and dedication to enable the institution forge ahead.

Besides, Antigha in the statement said: the NDA wishes to seize this opportunity to assure all staff of the institution that this board is not meant to witch-hunt anyone. Consequently, all staff of the academy are advised to disregard rumours making the rounds that the committee is set-up to victimise staff.
