Crack in Ekiti House of Assembly:Legislators agree to remove principal officers over LG bill

THE feud between Ekiti State Governor, Ayo Fayose and the state House of Assembly over powers to remove local government chairmen in the state may take a new dimension today with a likely change of leadership in the House.

Dependable sources in the House hinted at the weekend that plans to effect a change of leadership which was likely to affect all the principal officers of the House were hatched on Friday at a meeting between the governor and the legislators.

Ajigbolamu, had last week kicked against the local government bill brought by the governor asking for powers to remove any erring local government chairman without recourse to the House.

The Speaker, DAILY TIMES learnt, also invited his colleagues from other Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) controlled states to intervene and persuade the governor to drop the bill but all to no avail.

The turning point came last Friday when Fayose succeeded in wooing the legislators to his side at a meeting at which they agreed to remove all the principal officers who opposed the bill.

Speakers intervention could not yield positive result because the legislators in a turnaround statement claimed that they had not been favourably treated compared with their colleagues in other states owing to the selfish leadership in the House saying it was their time to deal with the Speaker by frustrating him.

Following the refusal of Speaker Ajigbolamu to do the bidding to the governor on the local government bill, Fayose was said to have withdrawn his support for him and other principal officers of the House therefore giving way for the removal of the Speaker and other principal officers in the House.

Already replacement had been proposed for the affected officers, they are Speaker, Mr. Friday Aderemi Ido/Obi II, Majority leader, Mr. Babade Kayode, Ikere II; Chief Whip Mr. Sunday Eijeowa, Ijero, and Deputy Chief Whip, Mr. Muyiwa Abegunde, Emure.

Governor Fayose was said to have pleaded with the legislators to retain the Deputy Speaker, Mr. Franklin Olatunbosun and the deputy Chief Whip, Mr. Bunmi Olugbade to retain their offices and remove the rest principal officers.

It was also gathered yesterday that the planned sitting of the House of Assembly today may be scuttled with the alleged removal of the House mace for safe keeping at the weekend.

Already the affected principal officers was said to have been asked to turn in their letters of resignation to prevent their removal in the floor of the House which they had done except the Speaker who argued that he would not resign but preferred to be removed at the floor of the House than for him to resign.
