Soyinka worthy of emulation Tinubu

AS elaborate activities
marking the 70th
birthday of Nobel laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, came to an end in Lagos,
at the weekend, the state Governor, Chief Bola Tinubu, has suggested that
the values symbolised by the literary icon be the foundation for realising
the nations dreams.
Speaking at a well attended special banquet for Soyinka at the Eko Le Meridien
Hotel, Lagos, Tinubu said the Nobel laureate had become part of the reality
of our existence.
Wole Soyinka signifies those values that can lead us to the nation of our
dream. The values of social conscience that compel the individual to challenge
injustice and repel indignity.
The values of rationality and healthy doubt that allow us never to believe
that there is no alternative and constantly impels us to creatively chart
a path through the thickest thicket of dogma. The values of progressive and
popular change that preach that no social progress can take place without
popular participation, Tinubu said.
The governor described Soyinkas consciousness as the defining essence of
his being, stressing that, unless we appreciate that commitment to ones
conscience is the most holistic definition and description of his 70 years,
we will miss the ball and kick the leg figuratively speaking.
While acknowledging Soyinkas stature as a civilised man of universal significance,
Tinubu noted that he was the quintessential Omoluabi, the product of a truly
Yoruba environment in Ake, which enabled Soyinka to draw the line, which neither
man nor any of his creation must fall.
In his speech, Soyinka thanked those who had made the occasion a success and
expressed appreciation to Tinubu and his wife for their touching gestures
of love.
Among the guests, who graced the occasion were the Lagos State Deputy governor,
Mr. Femi Pedro, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Chairman, Mr. Audu
Ogbeh, Alliance for Democracy (AD) National Chairman, Chief Bisi Akande, Ngieria
Labour Congress (NLC) President, Adams Oshiomhole, Ambassador Olusegun Olusola,
Professor Femi Osofisan, Dr. Yemi Ogunbiyi, Dr. Olu Agunloye, and several
members of the diplomatic corps.
