Nigeria Honours N199m Obligation to C'Wealth From Juliana Taiwo in Abuja The Federal Government has approved payment of the sum of N199 million as remittance to Commonwealth of Learning (COL) to cover Nigeria's outstanding remittance of between year 2000 and 2003 and the annual contribution for 2004. Minister of State for Education, Hajia Bintu Ibrahim Musa, disclosed this when she led the Nigerian delegation to the Third Pan-Commonwealth Forum on Open Learning in Dunedin City, New Zealand at the weekend. In a release made available to THISDAY, Musa solicited the support of the newly appointed President of the organisation, John Daniel, for advancing the on-going process of widening access to education in Nigeria through the use of open/distance learning delivery mode. She pleaded with the body to further aid Nigeria in her bid to build capacity for Open Distance Learning (ODL) and widen access through the use of innovative approaches, which includes Open Polytechnic and Open School to cater for the demand for technical, vocational and secondary education in Nigeria. In his remark, Daniel commended the for Presidency the release of the N199 million remittance fee and pledge COL's collaboration with Nigeria in its desire to widen access to education using the ODL mode which has been found world-wide to be more innovative and equally qualitative as the conventional face-to-face delivery mode.
