Customs Impounds N24m Frozen Beef By Francis Ugwoke Two-40ft. containers of frozen beef valued at N24 million have been intercepted by the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS). Comptroller of Customs, Federal Operations Unit, Mr Musa Daura told newsmen that the items which were in refrigerated containers were impounded along Ijebu Ode/Shagamu road on Thursday. Daura said the seizure was unique, as the Service had in the past recorded seizures of mainly poultry products. "This seizure is remarkable because since the ban on the importation of beef and poultry products, we have been recording mostly seizures of poultry products", he said. Daura also announced what he called another unique seizure of bags of rice and groundnut oil along Idiroko/Ajilete axis. He explained that this was also unique because the tactics and methods adopted by the smugglers were thwarted by his officers. "The smugglers concealed these bags of rice and groundnut oil in garri sacks to evade detection. The groundnut oil were first put in water-proof bags before finally using the jute bags to package them", he said. He warned importers engaged in smuggling to drop such practices or continue to suffer the effect of the law. "I am again calling on these smugglers to quickly drop this illicit business called smuggling and direct their resources to legitimate businesses, because if they refuse to heed this call, they are assured of worst battles from my officers", he said.
