ALGON Supports S'Court On Council Tenure From Chuks Okocha in Abuja Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON) has declared its support for decision of the Supreme Court which puts the tenure of local governmen bosses at three years. ALGON spoke in Abuja against the backdrop of statements credited to some State Houses of Assembly that the tenure of local government chairmen and their councillors would be limited to only two years. The association said it would not recognise newly created local governments as its members. Addressing a news conference in Abuja, National President of ALGON, Hon. Baver Dzeremo said, "We are aware that some state houses of assembly passed bills that prescribed the term of office of the council chairmen to two years, but we have decided to stand by the decision and judgment of the Supreme Court of Nigeria which ruled that the term should be three years, this, we stand by." On newly created local governments, the ALGON chairman said, "the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria recognises only 774 local government and this is our stand point. "ALGON will not relate with the newly created local governments until the case involving the Federal Government and the states are disposed of."
