Why Corruption Can't be Erased in Customs - Usman
From Okon Bassey in Port Harcourt

Corruption cannot be erased in the Nigeria Customs Service unless the basic facilities and tools are provided to the officers and men in the service the Chairman of Presidential Committee on Customs Reforms, Mrs. Nenadi Esther Usman has decleared.

Mrs. Usman who is also the Minister of State for Finance while addressing Officers and Men of the Nigerian Customs, Port Harcourt Area 1 command, Rivers State yesterday said government is of the conviction that corruption has been the bane of the Customs Service in the country.

"Mr. President is aware of the issue that apart from the restructuring of the Customs, if corruption is to be tackled, it means that the basic facilities have to be provided for the officers and men of the Nigerian customs service".

"They need to be given what to use in working, they need tools to work with, office equipment and above all, their welfare has to be taken care of. If not we believe that the issue of corruption can never totally be erased the Minister declared.

She continued: "Generally, some of the problems we notice in the course of our work were the issue of accomodation, gross under funding of customs, office and residential accommodation were not enough, no promotion, quite a number of things but the issue is, it one thing to sit in Abuja and be told, and another thing is to go round and see things by ourselves".

The Minister who was also accompanied on the trip by members of her committee including Comptroller-General of Customs, Mr Gyang Buba observed that what the team has seen for the past weeks of the commencement of the inspection of Customs formations throughout the country statrting from Lagos was even worse than what they sat down in Abuja to imagine.
