Ex-Minister Tasks FG on Due Process From George Oji in Abuja Former Minister of Agriculture in the Second Republic, Mallam Ismaila Funtua, at the weekend in Abuja urged the Federal Government to strengthen the operations of the office of Due Process to ensure better performance. Addressing newsmen, Funtua also urged public support of the operations of Due Process, regretting however that its activities are currently being impaired by under staffing and shortage of equipment and infrastructure. He advised President Olusegun Obasanjo to properly equip and staff the outfit with a view to upgrading it to the status of a full agency, independent of the presidency. Funtua who was a one time president of the Newspapers Proprietors Association of Nigeria implored Obasanjo to make it mandatory for all public jobs to be vetted by the Due process office before final approval by government. "Every Nigerian should support the Due Process. As a matter of fact, all contracts with no exceptions must be subjected to due process," Funtua who is also the Chairman of Bullet Construction company, Abuja declared. The former minister also criticised the idea of paying some contractors in foreign currencies and others in local currency by the Federal Government, and called for the harmonisation of contract payments in local currencies. Funtua in addition suggested periodic review (say quarterly) of contract prices in line with foreign exchange fluctuations.
