New LG Bill Anti-Democratic-PDP Chief Kwara By Lola Adewoyin A frontline member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), in Kwara State, Alhaji Yekini Alabi had described the Kwara State Local Government Electoral (Amendment) Bill 2004 as an obnoxious and anti-democratic law. According to him, the law is against the rule of law and an attempt to deprive the people of the state their rights. In a press statement, in Lagos yesterday, Alabi said the intention of the bill was to delay the on-going petition in court and denying the petitioners justice. He said the law was made in bad faith and out of personal interest which is against the governor's oath of office. He specifically refered to Sections 2(3) and 2(6) both of which he said are against the provision of the nation's constitution. Alabi also refered to section 2(6) of the bill, which says that an appeal from the tribunal to the High Court means a stay of proceeding. He observed that the highest court of the land had once ruled that an appeal to a higher court did not mean a stay of execution. He said the party voted in the governor not to victimise them but to fight for their fundamental human rights. He said the bill was passed at a period Kwarans were questioning his withholding part of allocation to local governments. He appealed to the governor to wihthold his assent to the bill, so as not to betray the trust reposed in him by the people of the state and urged him to embrace the path of reason to unite the party rather than divide it.
