Women Urged to be Active in Politics Akwa Ibom From Efem Nkanga in Uyo Minister of Women Affairs and Youth Development, Obong Rita Akpan, has called on women to take up active participation in politics through utilisation of the 30 per cent political positions alloted to them by the Federal Government. Obong Akpan made this call in Uyo, at a luncheon organised by women in politics in honour of chief executive officers and wives of Head of Councils in Akwa Ibom State. She urged women to support one another attain the highest heights possible in politics. Obong Akpan, represented at the occasion by Dr Comfort Apata, called for the enlightenment of women, stressing that it is only through enlightenment and empowerment that the 30 per cent given to women could be effectively realised. In her remarks, the state commissioner of Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Prof. Ekaette Etuk, congratulated women who made it in the last elections and urged them to use their positions to raise the socio-political status and champion the cause of women in the state. The chairperson of the wives of Heads of Councils, Mrs Ekpo, advised women against engaging themselves in the handout syndrome and pledged to offer the women in politics all necessary support.
