LG Bill: Speaker, Principal Officers May be Removed Ekiti From Dipo Okunmuyide in Ado Ekiti Speaker of Ekiti State House of Assembly, Honourable Fola Ajigbo-lamu and other principal officers may be removed from office over crisis generated by the controversial local government bill. Reports reaching THISDAY indicates that the change in the leadership of the Assembly is expected to be effected today, and it may affect all principal officers. It was reliably gathered that the change was perfected last Friday at a meeting held between the state governor and the lawmakers at the government house where the speaker and all principal officers were asked to resign their postitions or be impeached. The Speaker and Governor Ayo Fayose had been at loggerheads for the past three weeks over a bill on local government reforms sent to the Assembly by the state executive council. The bill contain provision for the removal of any erring council chairman and councillors by the governor without following provisions of the 1999 Constitution on the removal of elected political office holders. Ajigbolamu had kicked against the bill with the support of some of the legislators but the governor who wanted the bill to be passed into law as quickly as possible insisted that the Assembly must do his bidding. Last week, Ajigbolamu invited speakers from other PDP controlled states in the South-west to meet with the governor and convince him on why the bill should be stepped down. Following the Speaker's refusal to tow Fayose's line, the governor was said to have withdrawn his support for him. This paved way for his removal and that of his principal officers who have not enjoyed the confidence of their colleagues in the past. Fayose had been the speaker's saving grace November last year, when the Assembly called for his impeachment.
