'Establish Treatment Centre for Liver Diseases'
Fct
By Godwin Haruna

Worried by the high rate of Hepatitis B Viral (HBV) infection among Nigerians, Association for the Study of the Liver in Nigeria (ASLIN), has called on the Federal Government to urgently establish a centre for the treatment of digestive and liver diseases.

In a communiqu issued at the end of its 9th Annual Scientific Conference and National Viral Hepatitis B Workshop held in Abuja recently, and made available to THISDAY, the association recommended that the proposed centre be equipped with facilities for all sophisticated laboratory tests and liver transplantation as the modern mode of treatment of chronic Hepatitis B infection is not yet available in the country.

The communiqu signed by the association's President, Professor Segun Ojo and Secretary General Dr. D.A. Ndububa, observed that Nigeria was among countries with a very high prevalence of HBV, adding that the virus was responsible for most clinical liver diseases in the country.

According to the communiqu, about five per cent of Nigerians were healthy carriers of the virus.

The communiqu also noted that the cost of treatment of an individual with chronic HBV infection is very high and unaffordable to ordinary Nigerians.

In view of the high cost of treatment and its non-availability in the country, the association urged government to pursue preventive strategies such as the dissemination of information about the modes of transmission, using the mass media as well as the other traditional means of information dissemination at all levels of the society.

It also called for the promotion of Hepatitis B vaccination at national and state levels, through advocacy and faithful implementation of NPI programme for HBV.
