2007: Politician Canvasses Support for N/East Gombe From Saka Ibrahim in Gombe A chieftain of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Gombe State, Alhaji Abdullahi Jalo, has called for support for the North-East sub-region in 2007 presidental race. Jalo, in an interview with newsmen also appealed to politicians not to castigate the zone because of its vested interest in 2007. According to him, no zone in the country could win the presidency without the support of the other five zones. Apparently reacting to the comment of the Kaduna State Chairman of the National Democractic Party (NDP), Alhaji Hassan Jalo, that former President Ibrahim Babangida could win the next election without the North-East, the politician advised politician to becareful with their utterances. He said the North-East has been relevant since the first republic and would continue to be relevant. Said Jalo , "I want to appeal to other zones to surport the North-East for the 2007 race. The statement by Hassan Jalo is unfortunate. In the history of Nigeria, I think North-East is important. I think those making unguarded statement should stop it." The politician said apart from the serving vice President, Alhaji Abubakar Atiku, the zone had produced political heavyweights like the late prime minister, Alhaji Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, the first speaker of the House of Representatives, Alhaji Waziri Jalo and the first defence minister during the reign of Sardauna of Sokoto, AlhajiMahhmud Ribadu.
