Scrabble

Nigeria's new Scrabble Grand Master, Mr. Ayo Adekunle Fasheyiro has restated his determination not to only become the next African champion but to also go on and wrestle the world title from 19-year-old Thai, Panupol Sujayakorn.
Speaking exclusively to THISDAYSports, Fasheyiro popularly called 'Ayox Fash' in the discipline's circle said, "Ambition is no crime. I want to make it a hat trick. I had a baby boy on the eve of the Grand Master, then went on to win the Grand Master. My third target is the African title."
"Nigerians play scrabble. An average player here is a potential champion. We have dominated the African Scrabble scene and have been able to rise to the 8th position in the World leaving us within the range of producing a World Champion. We can and it would be now," he declared with optimism.
According to him, "One person that has been able to hit my heart and respect is the wife of the Kwara State governor, Mrs. Toyin Saraki, who has initiated a Scrabble Development Initiative in her state. Other state governments should emulate her."
He also gave reasons why he felt Nigerians should dominate the sport. "If a Thai, at 19, a secondary school graduate, whose country does not speak English can become a world champion, then, why can't we who speak professorial English not produce the world champion?"
Meanwhile, in the ongoing Mini-Masters in Abuja, Ayox Adekunle led at the end of the first day with nine games out of 10 with a 613 margin followed by Sanni Moshood with seven games and margin of 637.Tunde Adigun has seven games and 191 margin with Anthony Okolo with the same game scores and 109 margin. Dennis ikekeregor has the same games but margin of 80.The number of players playing was increased to 16 to include all the 12 invited players, 2 other qualified players: Oshodi Sunday and Durojaiye Segun 2 wildcard players: Ogbonyomi Friday and Umebiye Cyril who were presented by our hosts.
