Lawmakers Charge BPE, CBN On Minting Firm
From Ahamefula Ogbu in Abuja
House Committee on Banking and Currency has directed the Central Bank of Nigeria and the Bureau of Public Enterprises not to hand over the running of the Nigerian Security and Minting Company to any foreign firm under the privatization policy of the Federal Government.
Speaking during an inspection visit to the facility of the company in Abuja, Chairman of the Committee, Hon Modibo Ahmed asked the apex bank instead to make funds available to enable the company buy state of the art machines with which to operate.
He argued that there was enough experienced Nigerians to run the Mint and insisted that on no account should a foreign firm be allowed to handle such a sensitive and important place when there were experienced and qualified Nigerians to do the job.
Modibo said their position should not be seen as opposing the privatization policy of the Federal government but directed that the fresh bidding which was embarked upon after the Spanish firm that won the first bid was rejected by the Central Bank be put on hold and the place only given to a Nigerian firm to handle.
"Whatever is going to be done has to be done for the Mint to come back to its feet and make sure that there is no foreign presence being brought here to manage the factory. We want us Nigerians and we can do it. I don't see any reason why somebody should come from abroad to come and run this place. We have the brains in this country, there is nothing that we don't have, and we just need a push.
"We have serious people, lets look for them and let them come into the factory and take care of it. I don't see any reason why somebody has to come from abroad", he said.
On the state of the company's factory in Lagos, he described it as "a shame and eyesore" but vowed to do all within his power to ensure that it was returned to life in the shortest possible time.
