ICPC: Court Convicts ABU Medical Director From Lillian Okenwa in Abuja For transferring millions of naira from the salary account to overhead account of the Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, (ABUTH), Zaria, a High Court of Kaduna State has convicted the Chief Medical Director, Professor Alhassan Mela Yakubu. Also convicted was the hospital's former Director of Finance and Supplies, Alhaji Abdullahi Dan-Asabe. The two accused were charged to Court on June 2003 by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related offences Commission (ICPC) on a twelve count charge for the illegal transfer which is contrary to section 22(5) of the ICPC Act, 2000. The presiding judge, Justice Mohammed Tukur found the two accused persons guilty of eight out of the twelve count charge and convicted them for the offence of conspiracy to transfer as well as for the offence of transferring money from one vote to the other. Each of the convicts according to a statement made available to THISDAY by Mike Sowe, Head, ICPC's Public Enlightenment Unit is to pay a fine of N50, 000 for each count. Section 22(5) of the act provides that: "any public officer who transfers or spends any sum allocated for a particular project or service or another project or service shall be guilty of an offence under the Act and on conviction be liable to one (1) year imprisonment or a fine of fifty thousand naira." The second accused staff of the hospital; Alhaji Hassan Sule was discharged and acquitted for want of evidence. Aside from being removed as Chief Medical Director, Professor Yakubu's name was deleted from the National Honours Award list forwarded by the Federal Government to the ICPC for vetting.
