Staff Hold Ayu Hostage over Entitlements
From Juliana Taiwo in Abuja
Some staff of the Ministry of Internal Affairs yesterday held their supervising Minister, Dr. Iyorchia Ayu, hostage in his Abuja office for about four hours over alleged non-release of funds meant for the payment of staff monetisation entitlements.
The action led to delay in attending a planned facility visit to the Department of National Civic Registration (DNCR) by Ayu as he was forced to abandon his vehicle and sneaked into his office amidst boos and jeers. It took efforts by his security aides when he was running late for the assignment to break the gate and let him out.
Speaking with newsmen, some of the aggrieved staff alleged that money for the payment of the entitlements was released since April, but that it was lodged in a fixed deposit account by some highly placed staff to grow interests for them.
They claimed efforts to get the Minister pay the money had failed. They said at a meeting between Management of the Ministry and the Union on Monday staff were told categorically that they would not be paid because the money would not go round.
"It is not true that enough money was not released for our allowances but the money released was used to pay people employed through the back door at DNCR", one of the staff, alleged.
Speaking to newsmen later at the function, Ayu said he met a lot of backlog of salaries, which he was still trying to address.
He said what was left was monetization benefits, which was in four months arrears. "The decision was for us to pay for July and two months arrears but the staff at the headquarters wanted to be paid first and we said no that everybody would be treated equally no matter where the are and at the same time. We want to put the issue of arrears behind us and by September the issue would be settled once and for all.
Ayu after the tour of the facilities at DNCR expressed satisfaction at the progress of work and said he was there to see things for himself after the resumption of the technical partners who had pulled out of the contract earlier, which resulted in the stoppage of National ID Card project for a while.
