New World Bank Country Director Assumes Duties From Kunle Aderinokun in Abuja World Bank Country Director for Nigeria, Dr. Hafez Ghanem assumed yesterday in Abuja. Ghanem took over from Dr. Mark D. Tomlinson whose assignment ended last Wednesday, July 14. Until this appointment, the new Director was the Country Director for Madagascar, Cosmoros, Mauritius and Seychelles. A statement from the Bretton Woods institution, which disclosed this said Ghanem, an Egyptian joined the World Bank in 1983 as Young Professional and has worked as an economist and sector manager in several countries including Indonesia, Bangladesh, the Philippines, Tunisia, some countries I West Africa and in Europe and Central Asia. He was a member of the core team that prepared the 1995 World Development Report on "Workers in an Integrated World." The new country director who has more than 20 research papers and publications to his credit is a member of the American Economic Association. He earned his first degree in Economics from the American University, Cairo in 1978, an M.A. in Economics from the same University in 1980, while he also earned his Ph.D in Economics from the University of California in 1983 with specialization in International Trade, Monetary Theory and Econometrics.
