NEPA Nets N6bn Revenue in June
From Onyebuchi Ezigbo in Abuja
The National Electric Power Authority (NEPA) said it recorded the sum of N5,647,336,145.95 as revenue for June, this year.
According to the authority's monthly revenue statistics obtained by the THISDAY yesterday, the amount represents a further decline from the figure realized in May which stood at N5,816,261,705.09.
Also within the same period, power generating capacity of NEPA has continued to fluctuate between 2,300 and 3000 Maga Watts, with the present capacity standing at about 2,365 MW as at yesterday.
A top official of NEPA who spoke to THISDAY on condition of anonymity attributed the dwindling revenue profile to a number of factors, namely ; poor response of consumers to settlement of bills, existing method of issuing bills, which is often prone to mistakes as well as marked reduction in power supply level, which has been on for some time now.
The source blamed the situation on low water level at the hydro power generating plants and the disruption of gas supply to Egbin and Delta power stations during the rehabilitation work in Nigerian Gas Company as having forced down the generation capacity.
"The hydros which were expected to be at their peak at this period of the year because of the rainy season could hardly run most of the units due to low water level", he said.
As a result, he said the authority is currently relying more on the gas-powered electricity plants to provide supplies to its numerous customers.
THISDAY also gathered that the over N300 million new billing system initiative whose funding approval was granted by President Olusegun Obasanjo at the Federal Executive Council (FEC) Meeting early last month was yet to get off the ground.
The new method was meant to remove the old fault-ridden billing system and replace it with a more error-proof one that would not check fraudulent practices but also facilitate quick settlement of electricity bills by consumers.
