Extortion: 900 Policemen Fired From George Oji in Abuja The police high command has disclosed that as part of efforts to sanitize the operations of the force and reposition its service, 900 of its personnel caught for extortion and other unwholesome activities were sacked in the past one year. "In the last 12 months a total of 900 policemen caught extorting money from motorists have been sacked by the force." The Inspector General of Police, Mr. Tafa Balogun made this disclosure yesterday in Abuja while speaking at the formal inauguration of the "Committee on Police Performance Monitoring," a civilian oversight outfit set up by the Minister of Police Affairs, Broderick Bozimo. Balogun describe the establishment of the monitoring outfit as a welcome development meant to complement his earlier other efforts in checking the excesses of his men. Bozimo said the setting up of the outfit bore promise and hope for greater participation of Nigerians in the policing of the country and the evolution of modern democratic policing.
