ASUU Asks FG to Implement Autonomy Act By Bayo Adeleke Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has called on Federal Government and management of the university system to start implementing the autonomy bill signed into law by President Olusegun Obasanjo on July 10, 2003. The University of Lagos (UNILAG) branch chairman of the union, Dr. Abayomi Akinyeye, who said this during a press briefing in Lagos, explained that the delay in implementing the bill has resulted into an attempt to get the National Assembly to pass another Act which negates the essence of University Autonomy. ASUU, Akinyeye said, was against another bill because the one certified okay by the Clerk to the National Assembly, Dr Ibrahim Salim, on July 3, 2003 and assented to by President Obasanjo on the 10th of same month has not been implemented. According to him, Nigeria constitution gives room for operation of a bill or act before it can be amended, adding that in the interest of the nation the bill should be allowed to exist. "While ASUU has appealed to the National Assembly to defend the law properly enacted in 2003, we also urge the public to appeal to the National Assembly to refuse to pass another law that would make nonsense of the existing law," he said.
