Rotary Club Expends $500m on Polio From Charles Onyekamuo in Awka Rotary club international yesterday said it had expended $500m world-wide fight polio affecting over two billion children. Speaking while on a courtesy visit to Anambra State Governor Dr. Chris Ngige, at the Government House, Awka the Governor of District 9140 for the South-east and South-south zones of the Club, Mr. Joe Ikeakor, added that year 2005 has been set aside as the target for the eradication of Polio in Nigeria. Efforts, he said, are being made to ensure that the set goals are achieved on record time. Describing the Rotary Club as a humanitarian organisation focused on improving the lives of people, Ikeakor said the club was making contributions towards uplifting the educational and other social sectors of the Nigerian society, adding that Rotary has embarked on enlightenment programmes targeted at making dwellers in the country's hitherland get to know health related issues that had plequed society for a long time now. He expressed appreciation to the governor for renewing the parcel of land allocated to the club in Onitsha, but which was disposed it by the Mbadinuju administration and assured to effectively utilise it for the purpose it was allocated. But Ngige charged politicians in the state to emulate the rotary club international's selfless service to humanity, noting that most politicians elected to serve the people should see then exalted positions as service to the people.
