Insurers Asked to Assist Grassroots Women in Business
By Nnamdi Duru
The Nigerian insurance industry has been charged to increase the level of insurance awareness among women at the grassroots level. It was also asked to prevail on banks to accept insurance policies' certificates as collaterals for micro-credits to market women, artisans and petty traders.
This call was made by a former Director of the National Insurance Commission (NAICOM), Chief (Mrs.) Aduke Maina at the 2004 version of the "Annual Seminar for Women in Insurance" organised by the Chartered Insurance Institute of Nigeria (CIIN) in Lagos recently.
Addressing participants at the seminar, Maina threw a challenge before the industry in the area of increasing the level of insurance awareness among grassroot women.
"I urge you to consider policies for women at the grassroots level, particularly the market women, artisans and petty traders, taking into consideration their population.
"Importantly, there is need to create awareness in insurance for this class of people who hardly know what insurance stands for. They need to be educated on the benefits attached to insurance in the language understandable to them and encourage them to buy into it", she advised.
Maina also encouraged insurance practitioners to look at the possibility of arranging with other financial institutions to ensure that insurance certiticates are accepted as collaterals for micro-credits to artisans, market women and petty traders.
"We should look at the possibility of arrangements with banks and in particular, community banks for women artisans and traders to use their policies as collaterals", the former NAICOM Director advised.
She also encourage professional insurance women to delve into politics with a view to filling the numerous vacancies in political circles come 2007.
"I would like to observe that so many women here are qualified to aspire to higher positions in government. Some are already occupying enviable positions with credible professional records. I want to emphasise here that there would be vacancies at various levels of government come 2007, including Aso Rock and I want to encourage you to make yourself available. Women insurers can also be good leaders", Maina charge.
