Obule cautions against divisive politics in
Delta

As groups within the People’s Democratic Party
(PDP) begin intense campaign for the governorship seat in Delta State, a
chieftain of the party, Chief Charles Obule, has cautioned against divisive
politics in the march towards 2007 general elections.
The Delta North and South Senatorial districts have
already formed a group called Equity 2007, with the aim of wresting power from the Central senatorial district
in the governorship election in 2007.
Proponents of Equity 2007 argue that Delta Central
zone has held unto power for so long in the state and should give way for
either the North or South to produce the governor in the next general
elections. The Central zone too is not ready for that and has also begun
serious moves to hold on to power.
Already, the jostling for the Government House has
started to heat up the polity in the state as each group now closely washes the
activities of the other in the scheme to seize the exalted seat of the
governor.
But Obule advised members, who engage themselves in controversies on
the pages of the newspapers, to avoid acts capable of fanning the embers of
disunity and ethnicity.
Obule, who is also speculated to be nursing the
ambition to run for the governorship election, urged the people of the state to
be committed to the ideals that would promote peace and unity of purpose. He called on them to work together as a
united family to support the determination of Governor James Ibori to move the
state forward.
Ibori had in his address on Democracy Day advised the
people against divisive politics, stressing the need for unity and harmony
among various sections of the state.
Speaking on his alleged political ambition, Obule stated that 2007 was
still far for him to make any declaration, stating that he was still consulting
and would at the appropriate time make his intention known.
But the people from the North and South zones would
have none of that as they say they are ready to counter such declaration, maintaining
that for now, there is no vacancy at the Government House for a candidate from
the Central zone.
