MTN's Y'hello evil

MTN, one of the GSM operators in the country, seems to have decided that it is a lot easier to take Nigerians for granted and get away without a fight.

Recently, the network, in a bid to portray itself as a socially responsible company, took souvenirs such as peak caps to a private school in Alaka, in Surulere, Lagos and requested the pupils to put on the branded materials and shout Y'Hello. The hapless youngsters did but, to their chagrin, after the photo session, the visiting MTN officials retrieved all the souvenirs, leaving some of the pupils in tears because they could not understand why they couldn't be given ordinary peak caps, not to mention being paid for the unsolicited modeling job.

This deceptive marketing gimmick is indeed the height of insults, especially because I do not believe that MTN could be this brazen in its mother country, South Africa. One can only imagine the psychological damage that this event would have done to the minds of those children. They are not likely to forget it in a hurry.

Other cases may abound, but I am just using the above to let the authorities know it is time to immediately call MTN to order because there is no point paying lip service to this nation by painting everywhere with a defective yellow colour.
