Reconciling Anenih and Ikimi
It is a
conventional saying in media circles that bad news is good news. What they mean is that
journalists and their trade thrive only when there is sensational news
bordering on death, conflicts, riots, break-down of law and order, lurid
tales of private lies of celebrities, marriage break-ups, coups,
political upheavals,
etc.
The joy of reporters and their
publishers therefore knew no bounds when there were apparent indications
that a great son of Edo, Chief Anthony Anenih, and Governor Orji Kalu
were at loggerheads. No day
passed without some reports, most of them obviously exaggerated, that the
two worthy representatives of Nigerian politics had countered each other
in “very acidic language”.
Nigerian journalists sought
interviews with each of them with the objective of escalating the alleged
feud between them.
We of Concerned Edo Citizens
(CEC) did not, however, find the whole affair amusing. We were pained each passing day
while the battle of words lasted.
Finally, however, we are glad
to report that the two great men are back as great friends. This is good to Nigeria, not just
to us the sons and daughters of Edo and Abia. Rather than dissipate their energies on futile
feuding. Anenih and Kalu can
contribute positively to the debate on nation-building.
We of CEC salute the good
sense they have displayed in coming together to shame detractors and the
enemies of progress. Let
other politicians learn from Anenih and Kalu.
However, our greatest joy will
come when we hear that Chief Anenih has reconciled with Chief Tom
Ikimi. Why would these two
great sons of Edo continue to wrangle when they could use their energies
to develop out great State?
CEC pleads passionately with
Anenih and Ikimi to come together in the interest of their children and those
yet unborn.
