Obasanjo assures oil firms on security
From Madu Onuora, Abuja

PRESIDENT Olusegun Obasanjo on Monday assured oil firms operating in the country that the Federal Government is putting in place measures to enhance the security of lives and property of their workers.

On the heels of the President's assurance, the Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) has announced that it would invest $9 billion in the country for the next five years.

President Obasanjo, who spoke when he met with a delegation of Shell International and its Nigerian subsidiary at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, also said the new security measures being put in place for oil firms would cover new installations in the Niger Delta.

The President said the governors of the Niger Delta region are in the vanguard of the crusade to fight criminality in area, adding that part of the effort is to curb theft in the high seas.

During the discussion on joint venture between Shell and Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), President Obasanjo asked for a speedy execution of the Afam Power Plant in Rivers State.

The leader of the delegation, Malcom Brinded, who is group managing director of Shell International, said the company had received "tremendous support" from the Nigerian government in its areas of operation.

On the delegation was the Managing Director of the company in Nigeria, Mr. Chris Finlayson while the Presidential Adviser on Petroleum, Edward Daukoru, sat for the discussion.
