Edo revives agric council
From Mike Osunde, Benin
TWELVE years after its inauguration, Edo State on Monday resuscitated its moribund state council on agriculture for a renewed impetus in that sector of its economy.
The state Governor Lucky Igbinedion said the re-inauguration was a further demonstration of government's commitment to ensuring proper co-ordination of its agricultural policies and programmes at the state and council levels.
Headed by the state Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources, Mr. Chris Agbonwanegbe, the council has as its members all the supervisory councillors for agriculture in the 18 councils, as well as the programme managers at the state Agricultural Development Programme (ADP) and at the state communal farms.
Inaugurating the council, Igbinedion recalled that it was first inaugurated in 1992 but due to the unstable political situation in the country before 1999, the council became moribund.
He said the decision to resuscitate it was to give it the needed impetus to bounce back to life, enhance the overall agricultural development of the state, and the proper co-ordination of government's agricultural policies and programmes.
Saying his administration was determined to move agriculture forward in the state, Igbinedion said the local councils have a major role to play, particularly because of their nearness to farmers, adding that the government has since purchased 24 tractors for use at the council level.
While urging its members to work assiduously to achieve the set goals, Igbinedion urged them to translate both national and state agricultural policies into reality to ensure that his administration leaves a visible mark in the field of agriculture.
The commissioner promised that his council would deliver its promises.
