Court convicts two ex-varsity teaching hospital chiefs
From Jane Ezereonwu, Abuja

A FORMER Chief Medical Director (CMD) of Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital (ABUTH), Professor Alhassan Mela Yakubu, has been convicted by a Kaduna High Court.

Also convicted is the institution's former Director of Finance and Supplies, Alhaji Abdullah Dan-Asabe.

According to a statement by Mr. Mike Sowe of the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC) made available to The Guardian in Abuja, both men who were convicted last Friday had been arraigned on a 12-count charge of transferring millions of naira from the salary account to Overhead Account of ABUTH, Zaira, contrary to section 22, sub-section 3 of the Corrupt Practices and Other Offences Act 2000.

The statement added that the judge, Mohammad Tukur, found the accused persons guilty of eight out of the 12-count charge and convicted them for the offence of conspiracy to transfer as well as for transferring money from one vote to another, adding that each of the convicts was to pay a fine of N50,000 for each count.

Section 22 (5) of the ICPC Act states thus: "Any public officer who transfers or spends any sum allocated for a particular project or service on another project or service shall be guilty of an offence under the Act and on conviction be liable to One (1) year imprisonment or a fine of 50,000 naira."
