It causes poliomyelitis, an epidemic virus infection which attacks the motor neurons of the anterior horns in the brain stem and spinal cord. This invasion may cause flaccid paralysis and muscle wasting. Besides the patient being handicapped, death may occur from paralysis of the respiratory muscles. Poliomyelitis has almost been wiped off in most parts of the world but in India and Africa, with about 80 per cent of African polio cases reported in Nigeria. The North is particularly plagued with this disease. It could however spread further to other parts of Nigeria, if not well tackled. In fact, the recent difficulty Nigerians travelling to America experience is because of polio infection. Poliomyelitis is well-controlled by effective vaccination (Salk and Sabin).
