According to Rimi, who spoke with Daily Sun in Maiduguri, "it is a useless talk for anyone to say it (Presidency) has not been zoned to the North. It is a must that the Presidency returns to North in 2007." Faulting President Olusegun Obasanjo’s position that the PDP has not decided which zone to produce the Presidency, Rimi, who contested for the post in 2003, said the zoning of the nation’s number one job was "a written understanding in the PDP." He said if not for the agreement to rotate the Presidency, "Obasanjo would not have emerged as the President in the first place." However, Rimi said that rotation of the Presidency would "not produce a competent president," adding, "I prefer election of a president based on his own merit." On why rotational Presidency was adopted, Rimi said: "Some (people) said there should be rotational Presidency so that it can bring about peace and unity in the country. They started with Obasanjo, a southerner. He has spent his first tenure and he is going ahead with the second term. So it is a must the Presidency returns to the North."
