    Iraqi militants seize 3 Africans

    CHINWE MADUAGWU, with agency report

AFRICANS yesterday joined the list of hostages in Iraq with the abduction of two Kenyans and an Egyptian by militants calling themselves "The Holders of the Black Banner."

The three Africans were abducted together with three Indians.

The abductions followed a call also yesterday by the Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak on militant groups in Iraq to end kidnappings and killings and give peace a chance.

He spoke at a one day conference of Iraqi neighbours held in Cairo.

Meanwhile, the militants have said they would behead the hostages (all of them truck drivers) one every 72 hours starting from 8.00pm yesterday if their countries did not immediately pull out of Iraq and the company they work for did not close its branch there.

A statement issued by the group, read in part, "we have warned all the countries, companies, businessmen and truck drivers that those who deal with American cowboy occupiers will be targetted by the fires of the Mujahedeen.

"Here you are once again transporting goods, weapons and military equipment that backs the U.S. Army."

Neither of the three countries-India, Kenya and Egypt is part of the 160,000 member coalition force in Iraq though the Iraqi Interim Prime Minister, Mr. Iyad Allawi recently appealed to India and Egypt to join the coalition and send troops.
