The chairman of the commission, Hamman Tukur, represented by one of his commissioners, Alhaji Magaji Muazu, disclosed this yesterday during a courtesy call on the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Alhaji Aminu Bello Masari. He lamented that the budget presented by the commission for this year was reduced by about 85 per cent, leaving only N30 million. Already, he said the commission has exhausted the amount approved in the budget and that the N30 million was less than half of the amount approved for the commission in the 2003 budget. Muazu added that faced with the financial strait, the commission wrote to President Olusegun Obasanjo who referred it to the Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, who in turn directed the body to the National Assembly. The commissioner alerted that if the situation was not addressed, activities at the commission might be jeopardised. Masari advised that the ministry of finance should apply for virement as a way out. "If you have gone to the Minister of Finance, then it is simple. Let the minister of finance apply for virement," he said.
