230704 today:
Minister asks NCC to probe GSM scare
By Clifford Ndujihe Senior Staff Reporter

D ISTURBED by the growing fears over GSM numbers and death, the Communications Minister, Chief Cornelius Adebayo, has directed the National Communications Commission (NCC) to investigate the matter and resolve the controversy.

In an exclusive chat with The Guardian yesterday, the minister said he took the decision to assuage the apprehensions of members of the public even though it was scientifically impossible for someone to die as a result of answering a telephone call.

He spoke at the Lagos Airport Hotel, Ikeja after attending the 75th birthday anniversary of the first civilian Governor of Lagos State, Alhaji Lateef Kayode Jakande.

Last week, a major controversy broke out in the country that receivers of calls from certain GSM numbers would faint or die.

Reacting to the development, Adebayo said his ministry was yet to receive a genuine case of someone dying or suffering an ailment from answering calls.

Nevertheless, he said the government has to act fast because "we are not waiting for someone to fall dead before we do something."

His words: "I have heard about it and I have referred the matter to the communications commission which has the responsibility of monitoring and adjudicating on matters of this nature.

"One will offhandedly say it is a scientific impossibility but that cannot be enough for the people, so the matter is being looked into.

"All we have heard is hearsay. We have not been able to put our hands on anything. It is not that we are waiting for someone to fall dead before we do something. Some of those numbers, as far as we know, do not have origin," he added.
