How to combat cyber crime

SIR: I read the story by Jide Awe entitled "Fighting cyber crime in Nigeria" (The Guardian June 1, 2004). The rate of internet fraud is now alarming here in Nigeria.

The problem is not setting up agencies or organisations that will fight cyber crime in Nigeria, the problem is if cyber crime is eliminated or suppressed here in Nigeria, what will those involved in the act do

  • What else will they do to get money
  • Most cyber criminals are people who are unemployed and if cyber crime is suppressed or stopped they may venture into even more serious crimes. What I expect the government to do is to first create job opportunities for most unemployed graduates because I strongly believe this will lessen the practice of cyber crimes in our great nation.

Also every person in Nigeria must be enlightened about the internet and must also know that there are many honest ways of making money on the internet like working as an affiliate, sales person, secretary etc for companies abroad which I am doing.

I implore any Nigerian that is into cyber crime or is about to start to stop or discontinue the act and work as an affilate, salesperson online for companies abroad, just as I am doing.
