AWKA—GOVERNOR Chris Ngige of Anambra State has charged contractors handling various road projects in the state under the Federal Emergency Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA) to hasten work on the roads to ensure that the roads work are completed before the Christmas season when traffick on the roads are expected to double. According to Ngige, though the roads are Federal Government owned, they are used by Anambra people mainly. He reminded the contractors that both the Federal and Anambra State Governments belong to the ruling PDP, saying that there was need for the people to enjoy the dividends of democracy. Ngige spoke Wednesday during an interactive session with six of the contractors handling the project.
Stressing the need to hasten work on the roads, Ngige reminded them that before long the people of Anambra State would begin to return home for the Christmas celebration, pointing out that it would be sad if they are made to go through the “harrowing experience of passing through the dilapidated roads”. To ensure that the works are completed on schedule, Ngige announced that the interactive session would be held regularly. He advised the contractors to contact him if they experience any difficulties in pursuing their bills, even as he promised to speak with the Works and Housing Minister.
The contractors involved are RCC, Master Holdings, F.G.N. Okoye, Setraco and Centriforge and Grandstar Construction Company Ltd. Meanwhile, with the rains getting heavier, the roads in Onitsha are becoming impassable. The Onitsha end of the Enugu-Awka-Onitsha Federal road, just after the old toll-gate has virtually been taken over by dangerous potholes, causing terrible traffick jam and inflicting several damages on the vehicles plying the road. Also, the stretch from Nkpor New Parts Market to Borromew has also become impassable.
