ICPC Sues PDP Chief over N1m Bribe

National Vice Chairman (North Central) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Abubakar Magaji, has been dragged to a Minna High Court by the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC) for offering bribe of N1 million to Justice Ahmed Bima of Suleja High Court.

The PDP chieftain was arraigned before Justice Maria Dzukoal on a two-court charge, but the court was unable to seat due to the absence of the local judge who was said to be out of town.

According to the ICPC charge sheet, Magaji was accused of corruptly offering N1 million to Justice Bima on September 23 2000 at Suleja in order for the judge to show favour in a suit No NCHC/NB/25/2000 between Aliyu Haliru Dantoro and four others, versus Ishaq Jikantoro and eight others.

The action was alleged to have been committed while the case was still pending before the court, "thereby committing an offence contrary to and punishable under section 9(1) (b) of ICPC Act.

On the second charge, Magaji was accused of giving another N500,000 to show favour to the defendants in the same case.

Details on the ICPC charges sheet prepared by on Assistant Chief Legal Officer, Mr. A. Udofia, for the Attorney General of the Federation, said Magagi was reported to have approached Bima in his chambers in Suleja and brought him N500,000 in a polythene bag and drove off against the consent of the judge.

Bima was said to have reported the matter to the state Grand Khadi, who instructed the Chief Registrar to deposit the money at the Minna branch of the United Bank for Africa (UBA).

THISDAY gathered that six persons have been ,,, up as prosecution witnesses by ICPC. They include, Justice Bima, the state Chief Khadi, Alhaji Abdulamumuni Enagi and on Area Court Judge- Abdullahi Kasim.

Others are the Chief Registrar of the Niger State High Court, Umar Baba Wachiko and an ICPC operative who investigated the case.

With the absence of the trial judge, the case was then ,, for mention on Tuesday July 27, 2004.

It will be recalled Justice Bima based on the facts advised before him delivered judgment in favour of the plaintiff against Magaji Favorites in the Borgu Emership tassels which was finally resolved by the supreme court.
