Why We Chose Ake As Dikibo's Successor - Anenih
From Chuks Okocha in Abuja
Acting Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Board of Trustees, Chief Anthony Anenih, yesterday explained that the choice of Chief Godspower Ake as successor to Chief A.K. Dikibo was in line with the constitution and zoning arrangement of the party.
Speaking with newsmen in Abuja, Anenih said: "All the posts and offices in the party are zoned, inclusive of the South-south. The office of the National Publicity Secretary was zone to Cross River State, Zonal Secretary zoned to Akwa Ibom, Deputy National Secretary of the party zoned to Delta/Edo and the office of the Deputy Organizing Secretary zoned to Bayelsa, and the office of the Vice National Chairman zoned to Rivers state."
Anenih explained that since the office was zoned to Rivers State, "it becomes necessary that when the office becomes vacant the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party wrote to the party in the state to nominate a successor to late Dikibo. The letter was signed by the National Secretary of the party, Vincent Ogbulafor."
He said the Rivers State chapter of the party replied and nominated Ake, stressing that "it was after thought that the Bayelsa Governor, D.S. P Alamiseigha, wrote asking that Rivers and Bayelsa state should swap the office of the vice national chairman (south-south) and that of the deputy national organising secretary.
"This was not to be, because the NWC of the party insisted that the office was zoned to Rivers State and moreover the NWC never asked the Bayelsa State governor to nominate any candidate in the first place."
Also yesterday, some traditional rulers from the South-east region led by Chairman of the Southeast traditional rulers, Eze Ukandu, visited Anenih to commend him for withdrawing the N25 billion libel suit against the governor of Abia State, Orji Uzor Kalu.
