Minister Urges Compliance with Labour Laws
From Juliana Taiwo in Abuja

Minister of Labour and Productivity Dr. Hassan Lawal, yesterday said Federal Government has directed employers of labour in the country to ensure strict compliance with stipulated minimum standards regarding employer/employee relations.

Speaking at the retreat for officers on Grade Levels 14 and above in his ministry, the minister hinted that "we are determined to bring to order, those discovered to be involved in unfair labour practices. Erring employers who flagrantly violate our labour laws and International Labour standards will have appropriate sanctions imposed until full compliance is established. This is our focus and we shall not be distracted from it in any way."

Lawal said the retreat was packaged to enhance the knowledge of the ministry staff of government programmes. He challenged those present to take advantage of the resource persons chosen to enlighten them on the programme and charge them to ensure their staff are also enlightened on the new focus of the ministry as well as reforms programmes of government.

"Let me however warned that a monitoring strategy is being put in place to measure your performances vis-a-vis our expectations. We shall not hesitate to sanction any officer found to be under performing and/or under achieving. I am confident that you will justify the huge responsibility entrusted on you," he maintained.

In her opening remark, the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Timiebi Koripamo-Agary, observed that the retreat was first muted when the ministry was preparing its service charter and it was realised the need for workers to be conversant with the various reform programmes being introduced into the public sector by Federal Government.
