Yelwa: Rights Group Alleges Cover-Up
From Funmi Peter-Omale in Jos
Plateau State Government has been accused of deliberately covering up the recent happenings in Yelwa, Shendam local government where the activities of a terror gang was reported.
League for Human Rights in a press statement in Jos noted that there can never be peace when citizens are living in fear and when there is apparently no justice on the part of government.
According to Nankin Bagudu, "We think that government is not helping matters by denying the occurrence of this event. We recall that on Tuesday, February 24, 2004, an armed attack on the people of Yelwa and neighbouring villages resulted in wide spread killings, 41 of them in a church where they took refuge was similarly suppressed by government.
The event drew little attention in international and national media but left an ugly scar in the psyche of the people throughout the state and for 10 weeks they planned their revenge quietly, which eventually occurred in May 2."
T he Human Rights group averred that government should relate previous events and plead with the aggrieved communities as well as punish the perpetrators rather than sweeping it under the carpet.
While describing the incident as the handiwork of "enemies of peace", the human rights activist noted that the perpetrators were capable of destabilizing and making the whole peace process a child's play.
In Bagudu's words, "Hiding it would only make the people believe that the government of Gen. Chris Alli is taking sides.
As no human life is superior to another and no victims are superior to another and no victims are superior to other victims. We are getting worried that such acts coming during the declaration of the state of emergency is capable of scuttling the fragile."
According to him, government must not only provide security for lives and properties but should punish those that are refusing to accept peace.
