Kalu, Ibori's Ordeals Traced to Support for Ekwueme By Olawale Olaleye Imo State coordinator of Dr Alex Ekwueme Presidential Mr Ben Onyechere, has said the reason Delta and Abia states governors, Chief James Ibori and Dr Orji Uzor Kalu are facing hard times was due to their support for the Ekwueme presidential ambition. Onyechere, who spoke with THISDAY yesterday said the Igbo had better chances at the presidency in 2003, but the opportunity was traded by South-east leaders who were driven by self-interests. On Kalu, Onyechere said the reason the Abia State governor has been having a frosty affair with his deputy was as a result of envy. He, therefore, described as in order, the on-going plot to remove Kalu's deputy, Dr Charles Nwafor. He was of the view that the deputy governor should have taken the path of honour by resigning his appointment, and described Kalu as one of such rare breed politicians whose contributions to societal developments are commendable at whatever level. Describing as genuine, Kalu's push for an Igbo president, Onyechere said the dream to have an Igbo president would have been better achieved during last elections when many factors favoured the project. Noting that the recent thinking may have appeared in favour of the northern president ahead of 2007, Onyechere said it would be difficult for an Igbo president to emerge without keen support from the north. Consequently, he said the Ohanaeze Ndigbo may have started wrongly by incorporating people who sold out the Igbo ticket into serious committees in the group. He said similar mistake made during last election was what cost the South-east the presidential ticket.
