Eight Parties in Race for Council Posts Jigawa From Bala Nasir in Dutse Only eight parties have so far submitted names of their candidates in the August 9 local government election in Jigawa State. This was disclosed by the chairman of the state's Independent Electoral Commission, Alhaji Alili Madaka after his tour to the five Emirate Council of the state. Madaka who toured the Emirates to put finishing touches to the preparations for the election. He said; "the election will be on 10 delegates basis from polling units as designated in the state's electoral law of 2004." "Others," according to the chairman, "are Supervisory Councillors at the Development Area levels, while Councillors Chairmen and vice-chairmen are also to be elected from ward levels." Four different ballot papers are to be issued to voters on the voting day at the polling zones for them to elect the four different candidates, said Galadima, adding that the election is to be conducted using the open/secret balloting mode. However, this has raised dust especially among the opposition parties camps who declared that the system is not all that democratic as it has not given the voter his full rights of choice in which he would exercise to vote a candidate of his own choice. It was part of the clamour against the law that provided for the use of this mode of election that some members of PDP went to court calling for the nullification of the law. Meanwhile, the National Democratic Party (NDP) has announced its withdrawal from the oncoming election though no reason was given for the action while PDP declared that it will only contest in chairman, his deputy and councillors only.
