Tribunal Upholds Senator's Election From Christopher Isiguzo in Owerri The Governorship/ Legislative election petition Tribunal sitting in Owerri has dismissed the petition filed against the election of Senator Amah Iwuagwu of Owerri senatorial zone by the candidate of All Nigeria People's Party (ANPP), Chief Uche Nwole in last year's National Assembly election, for lack of merit. The tribunal, in a two and half hour judgement maintained that the petitioner, Nwole failed to prove his case in which he alleged that the said election was characterized by serious irregularities beyond every reasonable doubt. The Chairman of the five-man tribunal, Justice M.N. Oniyangi who read the judgement said the defeated ANPP candidate could not substantiate his claim that materials produced by INEC was not certified. He therefore dismissed the petition on ground that it lacked merit and accordingly upheld the election of Senator Iwuagwu. "The petition lacked merit while the petitioner failed to prove his case, senator Iwuagwu is hereby declared duly elected", he said. Addressing newsmen shortly after the judgement, Senator Iwuagwu reaffirmed his confidence in the judiciary as the last hope of the common-man. He said with the conclusion of the petition, he can now settle down to discharge his duties at the Senate, adding that he no longer has any other distractions.
