Don Advocates Restructuring of Political Parties
From Hammed Shittu in Osogbo
A political scientist, Professor John Ayoade, has called for the restructuring of all the registered political parties in the country in order for them to serve as a bridge between government and the people.
He said the present political parties are more of institutions for sharing the booties of office rather than performing the role of democratic institutions for the masses.
Ayoade disclosed this in Osogbo, Osun State capital at a workshop tagged "Post 2003 General Elections, Osun State in Perspective," organised for staff and elected officers of the Independent national Electoral Commission (INEC), Osogbo.
According to him, the registered political parties in the country have failed in the task of political education that can be used to enlighten their members on how to move the country forward.
He said that most of the parties lacked penetration because they are weak in political pedagogy.
Ayoade added that the registered parties also lacked philosophical understandings as they concentrated on the mundane and feeding the public with bread and butter issues.
He said "apart from this, political parties make promises beyond their capacity to deliver which at the end has continued to affect the socio-economic development of the nation".
Ayoade, however, called on the leadership of the political parties in the country to begin the restructuring of their parties so as to reflect the wishes and aspirations of the electorate.
Earlier, the Osun State Resident Electoral Commissioner (OSIEC), Prince Deji Sayebi, said the commission has put in place all machineries that would enhance a hitch free election come 2007.
He said the commission would make use of its Geographical Information System(GIS) and Geographical Positioning System (GPS) in future polls.
