Udeze Walks Out of Super Eagles
,li>Accuses NFA of neglect
PAOK Salonika leftback Ifeanyi Udeze has sensationally told KickOffNigeria.com that he is quitting the national team as a result of neglect from the NFA.
"I am very disappointed with the NFA and the coach," an angry Udeze said on the phone from France, where he says he is recovering from injury. "Nobody has called me after the Algeria match to ask how I am and how I am going about my treatment.
"It is only when they need you that you see them running helter skelter. I am not ready to play anymore. If I see any invitation letter to my club, I will personally blast them," Udeze claimed.
"You can't be killing yourself for people who don't care at all for you. What is the cost of a simple phone call? I was in Nigeria for a couple of weeks after the Algeria match but nobody even called to say 'how are you doing?' Is that fair?"
And he said that he is getting better. "My team is in Bordeaux at the moment getting ready for the new season, but I am somewhere near Bastia getting treatment. I am better now. All I have is just slight pains, but that will be gone in a few days. I should be back in Greece by Saturday."
Udeze made his international debut for Nigeria in January 2001 against Zambia and his last game was the combined World and African Nations Cup qualifier against Algeria in Abuja where he was stretchered off in the second half after a bad challenge.
However, FA spokesman Mr. Sam Kaalu said Udeze was wrong in saying that they made no attempt to contact him.
"Both the national team doctor and Coach Christian Chukwu spoke to him after the incident. The problem arose when he left without notifying us. We tried repeatedly to contact him at his club in Greece not aware that he was in France. Of course had we known we would have been in contact with him. We value having a good relationship with our players," he explained last night.
Should Udeze stick to his guns it would posse a major headache for national team handlers finding the right player to fill his shoes. Celestine Babayaro's indifferent form in that position for the Eagles made it easy for the PAOK star to supplant him as first choice fullback.
The handlers may be pressed into putting Garba Lawal there until they can find a suitable replacement.
