Minister, Association Chairmen Brainstorm on Olympics
  • As Mohammed hits Germany to see athletes
    By Duro Ikhazuagbe

With just over three weeks to the start of the summer games, Sports Minister Colonel Musa Mohammed (rtd) and chairmen of the 10 sports that qualified for the global fiesta in Athens brainstormed behind closed doors yesterday in Lagos.

The crux of the three-hour jaw-jaw was basically on how Nigeria can excel given the low quality of athletes in camp for the Olympiad.

Although the retired Army Colonel declined comments after the meeting, spokesman of the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC), Mr. Tony Nezianya said: "What the Chairmen and the Minister discussed was a total review of what is happening in all the camps where Nigerian athletes are training for the Olympics."

He added: "Reports from Cuba and Bulgaria where combat sports are in camp are favourable and encouraging. Perhaps, the 10 gold medals envisaged in Athens would be realised."

Nezianya said further, "there is little the NOC can say on the team now until we formally take charge of the team on the 25th of July in Stuttgart, Germany."

Meanwhile, the Sports Minister left Lagos last night for Germany where he is billed to see first hand the level of readiness of the athletes at the Stuttgart camp for the Olympics.

Also, Colonel Mohammed will watch the friendly game between the Falcons and world champions Germany put together as part of their build-up for the Olympic Women's' football event in Athens.

Nigeria's boxers in camp in Cuba are expected to join their colleagues who have their training camp in Bulgaria en route Germany. The nation has up to July 25 to name the full squad for the Games.
